Görres, Johann Joseph von
- Görres, Johann Joseph von
(1776–1848)
Theologian.
Görres was born in Coblenz, Germany. After a period as a teacher, he dedicated himself to the cause of German independence. In 1814 he started the Rheinische Merkur, the first important German newspaper, which was suppressed by the authorities in 1816. He returned to the Roman Catholic Church in 1824 and from thenceforth dedicated himself to theology. His most important work was his Christliche Mystik, a study of Christian mysticism. He also published several tracts demanding greater freedom for the Catholic Church in Germany. From 1827 he taught at the University of Munich where he was at the centre of a group of scholars dedicated to the revival of Catholicism. The Görres-Gesellschaft, founded on the centenary of his birth, is an important society devoted to Catholic scholarly research.
